Beginning in Moshi.

Finale: Moshi.

Route details: On Kilimanjaro, the Umbwe path has a reputation for being the most difficult. Rightfully so. The Umbwe path is the shortest, steepest, and most direct climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, which is approached from the south. Before climbing to the summit from Barafu, the trail bends east after passing Barranco Camp and travels beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field. The Mweka path is used for the descent.

Day 0: Touchdown in Tanzania

You will be met by your guide, who will give you a briefing on your forthcoming trip and check your equipment to make sure you have all the appropriate mountain gear, when you are picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi town. On this day, the missing equipment can be rented. No meals are included.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Elevation: 5,249 ft to 9,514 ft
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

The day starts off with a one-hour trip to Machame Gate, where registration procedures are finished. Transferring to Umbwe Gate thereafter involves passing through communities, coffee, and banana fields. On a forestry track that goes through the lush rain forest, the trail abruptly ascends. As we ascend the mountain between two rivers surrounded by enormous trees, the path becomes more congested and steeper. In the midst of dense vegetation and trees, Umbwe Camp is situated.
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 9,514 ft to 13,044 ft
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

The trek’s second day is across rockier terrain with little vegetation and ramshackle, moss-covered trees. A peek of Kilimanjaro may be glimpsed as we ascend. As we near Barranco Valley, the path becomes more level. From Umbwe Ridge, the trail descends through the unusual but stunning Senecio Follows to Barranco Campsite.
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

We start the day by making our way down a gully to the Great Barranco Wall’s base. Then we up the approximately 900-foot cliff, which is not technically difficult. We travel through a number of hills and valleys after leaving the top of the Barranco Wall before making a sudden turn into the Karanga Valley. We have a tougher climb up before we reach Karanga Camp. You will enjoy a hot lunch at Karanga Camp on this day. You will go for acclimatisation after a brief break. Take a stroll along the rocky incline leading to the Southern Ice Fields. Our likelihood of reaching Freedom Point Uhuru Peak will rise as a result.
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

We leave Karanga Camp after a tardy breakfast and go up the steep slope to Barafu Hut. You have now finished the Southern Circuit, which provides views of the peak from a variety of positions. We set up camp here, take a nap, and eat a leisurely dinner before getting ready for the summit night. From here, one can see Mawenzi and Kibo, the two summits.
At midnight, we’ll get up for hot beverages before beginning the ascent to the summit.
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft
Distance: 5 km/3 miles
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours
Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft
Distance: 12 km/7 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

We start our ascent of the summit about midnight, early in the morning. The hardest portion of the walk both psychologically and physically is this. At this elevation, the day can be extremely hot and windy. We climb in the dark for several hours, stopping frequently but only briefly. You will be rewarded with the most breathtaking sunrise you are ever likely to see approaching Mawenzi Peak close to Stella Point (18,900 feet). At last, we reach Uhuru Peak, which is Mount Kilimanjaro’s highest peak and the world’s tallest freestanding mountain. We now proceed directly from the peak to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for hut lunch and a quick break. Trekking poles are helpful because the terrain is fairly rocky and can be quite taxing on the knees. Due to its location in the upper forest, Mweka Camp may experience late-afternoon mist or rain. We have our final meal on the mountain later in the evening before a well-earned rest.
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft
Distance: 10 km/6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Vegetation: Forest

We continue the descent to Mweka Gate on our final day in order to pick up the summit certificates. Your crew will be waiting for you at the gate for the brief celebration, singing a Kilimanjaro song and performing other customs as you receive your awards. It could be muddy and damp at lower altitudes. African Traces transfer car will pick you up from the camp to the gate and drive you to your hotel for a hot shower and some relaxation. Prepare for either flying home or the upcoming adventure.
