Route details: Lemosho trail on Kilimanjaro is often one of the less travelled and calmer routes on the mountain. In terms of the natural systems and landscapes it travels through, it is also the newest and arguably the most diverse. This route takes you through a lush rainforest for the first two days before emerging into heath and moorland. On the third day, you’ll connect with the Machame Route. On the western side of Kilimanjaro, a narrow trail begins. It has some very steep and undulating sections. Arrival day from Moshi to Kilimanjaro airport

Day 0: Touchdown in Tanzania

You will be met by your guide, who will give you a briefing on your forthcoming trip and check your equipment to make sure you have all the appropriate mountain gear, when you are picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi town. On this day, the missing equipment can be rented. No meals are included.

Day 1: Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Londorossi Gate, Hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Drive to the Londorossi Park Gate for park registration and bag checking after breakfast and briefing. (A 4-hour drive or so). after completing all tasks at the Londorossi gate. Then return to the starting location from where a woodland route leading to Lemosho requires a 4WD vehicle. After eating, start walking along woodland pathways to the campground at Mti Mkubwa (huge tree).

Day 2: Hike Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After an early breakfast and medical checkup, we depart from camp and begin the ascent to the area of heath and moor. After lunch, we make our way through the Shira Caldera, a high-altitude desert plateau that is extremely dissimilar to the rain forest. Shira, a high-elevation desert, is one of the three peaks that erupted inside the Kilimanjaro ecosystem. Later, the summit fell, creating a crater that was finally filled with the lava flow from Kibo mountain. Weather and volcanic activity erode and blast away its rim. The crater rim has been destroyed by weather and volcanic activity. You’ll get your first up-close glimpses of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s peak, today.

Day 3: Hike Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2

After a medical inspection and breakfast on this day, you’ll hike across the Shira plateau to the east, stopping to acclimatise at Shira Cathedral Peak (3850m). From this peak, you can see Mt. Meru, Kibo Peak, and a variety of other breathtakingly beautiful natural features. From there, you can continue your walk to Shira Two Camp for a hot meal and a short break before going for acclimatisation. You can then return to the camp for tea, coffee, hot chocolate with popcorn or nuts, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Shira Camp via Lava Tower

We proceed eastward from the Shira Plateau along a hill, past the intersection that leads to Kibo’s peak. As we proceed, we turn to the south-east in the direction of the Sharks Tooth Lava Tower (4650m/15,250ft). The second junction, leading to the Arrow Glacier, is located not far from the tower. Moving on, we descend to the Barranco Camp. Despite the fact that you start and end the day at roughly the same level, this day is crucial for acclimatisation and will assist your body get ready for summit day.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

After a leisurely breakfast, we depart Barranco and hike over a rocky ridge up the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250m/13,900ft), across the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050m/13,250ft), and finally to the junction where the Mweka Trail meets. We keep going until we reach Barafu Camp. You have finished the South Circuit, which gives numerous perspectives of the top. With views of the summit in the distance, this is where we set up camp.

Day 6: Summit to Barafu Camp and back to Mweka Camp

We continue climbing to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers between midnight and two in the morning. You travel northwest and make your way over steep scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. The hardest part of the walk both physically and mentally is this section. You’ll take a little break at Stella Point, where you’ll be rewarded with the most breathtaking sunrise you’re ever likely to witness. The sunrise can be seen from the peak by more rapid hikers. On your hour-long journey to the summit from Stella Point, you might run into snow the entire way. When you get to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on both the African continent and Mount Kilimanjaro, congratulations!
After lunch at Barafu, we start our descent from the mountain by going straight down to the Mweka Camp. For the loose gravel coming down, gaiters and trekking poles can be useful. We reach Mweka Camp and take in our final night on the mountain.

Day 7: Drive from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

We continue the descent to the Mweka Park Gate after breakfast so you can pick up your summit certificates there. It could be muddy and damp at lower altitudes. Trekking poles and gaiters will be useful. Most likely, there will be enough to wear: shorts and t-shirts (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). When you receive your certificate from Kilimanjaro National Park, your team will be waiting for you at the gate with traditional music as well as Kilimanjaro songs.
At the Mweka gate, an African Traces car will be waiting to transport you back to your Moshi hotel (about 30 minutes).
