Beginning in Moshi.

Finale: Moshi.

Route details: The next-highest mountain is called Meru. Although completely eclipsed by Kilimanjaro in the minds of hikers, this magnificent volcanic cone is East Africa’s most scenic and gratifying climb because it requires dramatic and exhilarating walking along the crater’s razor edge. At about 2000 metres, Mountain Meru begins its rapid ascent from a 20 km wide circular base. At about 2500 metres, portion of the mountain’s wall has crumbled away, giving the upper half of the mountain the appearance of a massive horseshoe. Within the crater, a recent volcanic eruption generated a secondary peak known as the Ash cone, which adds to the natural beauty. The cliffs of the inner well below the top are among the tallest in Africa at more than 1500 metres high.

Day 0: Touchdown in Tanzania

You will be met by your guide, who will give you a briefing on your forthcoming trip and check your equipment to make sure you have all the appropriate mountain gear, when you are picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi town. On this day, the missing equipment can be rented. No meals are included.

Day 1: Meriakamba Hut in Moshi (Full board)

From Moshi, we take a car to Momela Gate. After registering briefly at the gate, our walk will start with a fully armed ranger leading the way. We will simply be able to observe wild animals like elephants, zebras, and giraffe, as well as monkeys, antelope, and frequently elephants, along the way. At Miriakamba Hut, you can have dinner and spend the night.

Day 2: Meriakamba Hut - Saddle Hut (Full board)

A short but steep day’s hike leads from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru. We’ll carefully make our way along the slope to get a breathtaking glimpse of the Meru Crater and the towering Ash Cone. After a hearty meal at Saddle Hut, we can go quickly to Little Meru’s (3,820m) peak for breathtaking views shortly before dusk.

Day 3: Saddle Hut - Summit Day – Back to Moshi

Around 1:30 a.m., we set out to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m), then move on to Cobra Point (4350m). If we get to the top in time for sunrise, we might be able to see Kilimanjaro Peak poking through the clouds (4,566 m). The last ascent is made via a stunning narrow ridge line that runs between the crater’s sloping outside wall and its precipitous inner cliffs. We stop at Saddle Hut for a quick break and breakfast before continuing our ascent to the Momella gate. At Momella Gate, the departing shuttle will be ready to collect you up and take you to your accommodation in Moshi.
