The Machame Route is the second most well-liked and undoubtedly one of the most stunning paths up the mountain. The Whisky Route, as it is often known, is a bit longer and more difficult than the Marangu Route. The only lodging available on the Machame route is tents, as opposed to huts on the Marangu route. The hiker who is a little bit more daring will benefit from the route’s slightly more challenging nature while also enjoying a scenic splendour that is not present on the Marangu route. About 80% of hikers reach Africa’s summit, given its difficulty.
Day 0: Touchdown in Tanzania
You will be met by your guide, who will give you a briefing on your forthcoming trip and check your equipment to make sure you have all the appropriate mountain gear, when you are picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi town. On this day, the missing equipment can be rented. No meals are included.
Day 1: Drive to Machame Gate 1,790 meter to Machame Camp 3,010 meter
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel at 09:30 a.m. and driven to the Machame entrance gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. The drive to the Machame gate, which is located in Machame village, will take approximately an hour. At the gate, your guide will be busy filling out registration forms and porters will be weighing luggage. You can walk around the entrance gate and see monkeys or watch the mountain team prepare the climb equipment. Once that is completed, your hiking adventure will begin. You’ll be deep within the wonderful mountain rainforest in no time, surrounded by very old trees, ancient ferns, liana, lichen, and moss that carpets the ground and drapes from the trees. With luck, you’ll be able to spot the beautiful black and white colobus monkeys in the treetops. After a 5 to 6 hour walk, you will arrive at your day’s destination, the Machame Camp, which is located just above the tree line at 3,010 metres. You will have your first mountain hot dinner at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro, followed by an overnight stay in tents.
Day 2: Hiking to Machame Camp 3,010 meter to Shira Camp 3,845 meter
Coffee first thing in the morning, then start packing your bags and heading out for breakfast. After breakfast, the guide will perform a medical checkup before you begin your second day of trekking. The path steepens and the landscape changes to moor- and heath land, with the open landscape allowing you to see the exciting mountain range. The journey on the second day is shorter than the first, and you will arrive at Shira Camp by mid-afternoon. The camp has an incredible view of the mountain, and at sunset, the sun illuminates Kibo’s rock face and glacier.
Day 3: Hiking Shira Camp 3,845 meter to Lava Tower 4,640 meter to Barranco Camp 3,960 meter
Wake-up coffee, as usual; medical checkup, as usual. You will hike up about 800 metres today, but you will sleep at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. Because you will be at a lower altitude, your body will be able to acclimatise more quickly. The hike starts with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the 4,640-meter-high Lava Tower. As the landscape changes to an afro-alpine desert, the vegetation becomes sparser. The path winds through the wide Barranco Valley, which is known for its lobelia and giant senecio plants. After about 6 to 7 hours of walking, you will arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain, the Barranco Camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft) to Karanga Valley (4,200m/13,780ft
Coffee to wake you up. You will have two breakfasts today; the first will be a climb of the Breakfast Wall, which is the (NIKE NAME) Barranco Wall. When it comes to safety, your guides will be there to help you. Following the ridge as it ascends and descends, you can enjoy stunning views of Kibo’s south glacier. Lunch will be served in the Karanga Valley.
Day 5: Hiking karanga Camp 4200 meter to Barafu Camp 4,640 meter
Coffee to start the day. Today, you will hike for 2 to 3 hours to Barafu Camp. You have completed the South Circuit, which provides views of the summit from a variety of angles. Here we set up camp, where you can relax, eat, and sleep early in preparation for the summit day.
Day 6: Hiking Barafu Camp 4,640 meter to / Stella Point/ Uhuru Peak 5,895 meter to Mweka Camp 3,080 meter
The hike begins around midnight, following hot coffee and light snacks. You will climb Kibo’s screes by headlight. You will arrive at Stella Point, the crater rim of Mt. Kilimanjaro, after about 5 to 7 hours of ascending in the dark. Another 1–2 hours of hiking along the crater ridge will bring you to Uhuru Peak (the summit), which stands at 5,895 metres. Enjoy the 360° view of the landscape below as the sun rises to see Kilimanjaro in all its glory. You are now on the Roof of Africa. The simple descent runs almost along the same route as the ascent, and you should arrive at Barafu Camp shortly before midday, where the porters and cook will be waiting for you. After a warm meal and a well-deserved break of approximately 1 to 2 hours, you will be on your way down to Mweka Camp 3,080 metres for a well-deserved rest. You will take the same route back to Barafu Camp, where the porters and cook will be waiting for you. You will be on your way down to Mweka Camp 3,080 metres after a warm meal and a well-deserved break of approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Day 7: Walking down to Mweka Camp 3,080 meter to Mweka Gate 1,630 meter to your hotel
After breakfast, the final ascent of your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a traditional songs about Kilimanjaro and Tanzanian life ceremony with the mountain crew. Then, after a 2 to 3 hour gentle descent through the rainforest, you will be picked up and driven to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After the hike, the Kilimanjaro National Park will be ready to receive your certificate. This is for those who visited Uhuru Peak/Stella Point. After a hot shower, the rest of the day is free to relax and swim. Shalom Trekking Adventure will bring your certificate and collect the questionnaire form as well as the medical form in the evening.
