OVERVIEW

The Marangu path is a well-known journey up Mount Kilimanjaro and is referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route. It is the most traditional and historic path. Given its gentle slope and reputation as the simplest path on the mountain, the Marangu route is preferred by many. Additionally, it is the only route that provides sleeping huts with shared lodgings. Although it’s unlikely that you’ll succeed in climbing to the peak in that time frame, the lowest number of days needed for this route is five. When ascending Kilimanjaro through the Marangu route, an additional day of acclimatisation on the mountain is strongly advised. So, we kindly ask that you take at least six days.

ITINERARY

Day 0: Touchdown in Tanzania
You will be met by your guide, who will give you a briefing on your forthcoming trip and check your equipment to make sure you have all the appropriate mountain gear, when you are picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi town. On this day, the missing equipment can be rented. No meals are included.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1980m) To Mandara Hut (2700m)
Distance covered: Approximately 12 kilometers
Approx. time taken: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

You will be picked up from Arusha (1400m) and transported to the Marangu Gate following an early breakfast at your accommodation (1980m). When you and your guide arrive at the gate, the porters will prepare and pack your hiking gear while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). The ascent into the rainforest will then start. You can anticipate rain, mud, and fog on this part of the hike. Additionally, keep an eye out for animals, such as Colobus monkeys! You will arrive at the Mandara Hut after climbing for 3–4 hours (2700m). Each hut features 6–8 bunk beds, accommodating a total of 60 trekkers, and solar power is used for lighting. There are flushing restrooms right next to the central hut. The porters will boil water for drinking and washing when they get to the campsite before the customers do. The chef will make the clients a snack and dinner. Mountain temperatures can dip to below freezing at night, so be ready!

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700m) To Horombo Hut (3720m)
Distance covered: 15km
Approx. time taken: 6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

After breakfast, hikers will start their ascent onto the heathen moorland from the jungle. Hikers can ascend to the rim of the Maundi Crater, which they will pass on their route, for a breathtaking perspective of the Kibo Crater. Exotic species like big lobelia and groundsel can be seen in the moorland. You will arrive at Horombo Hut after hiking for six hours (3720m). Horombo Hut, which lies on a tiny plateau, can accommodate 120 trekkers. The porters will set up drinking and washing water for you, just as the first night. Following evening snacks, our chef will prepare supper for you. As the temperature drops below freezing in this location, be prepared for a chilly night.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3720m) ( Acclimatization Day)

You will spend the day in Horombo Hut allowing your body to adjust to the high altitude. With the help of your guide, you can choose to go on a day hike to Mawenzi Hut (4600m) for more acclimatisation. Depending on your desire for the day, lunch can either be packed or eaten in the hut for breakfast and dinner.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3720m) To Kibo Hut (4700m)
Distance covered: 15km
Approx. time taken: 6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Included are breakfast, lunch, and dinner

You will continue your trek into the alpine desert ecosystem after an early-morning brunch. There are two trails that lead to Kibo Hut for hikers to choose from (4700m). The trail utilised the day before for the day hike to Mawenzi Hut can be found on the upper route, which is to the right of the junction. Because it requires less hiking, the lower route (found to the left of the fork) is more popular (1 hour shorter). The region between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks in an alpine desert is known as the Saddle, where Kibo Hut is situated. Although this camp lacks water, hikers can purchase mineral water and soft beverages at the camp office. In order to give climbers time to rest before tackling the summit that evening, a late dinner will be served. For specific instructions on how to get ready for summit night, ask your guide. Get to bed by midnight!

Day 5: Summit Attempt Kibo hut (4700m) Uhuru Peak (5895m) To Horombo Hut (3720m)
Hiking time: 8 hours to Uhuru and 6 hours to Horombo Distance: Approximately 6 kilometers ascent and 21 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Around 23:30, your guide will wake you up for tea and biscuits. You will then start trying to reach the summit. The path leading to Hans Meyer Cave is rocky (5150m). You continue climbing to Gillman’s Point (5681m). It takes a lot of effort to make it to this stretch of the trail because it is rocky, steep, and located at a high elevation. The Gillman’s restaurant is situated on the crater rim. From here, the trail is typically covered in snow until you reach Uhuru Peak, the top (5895m). An accomplishment of a lifetime is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro! Prior to starting the descent to Barafu, you will have some time to take pictures and enjoy tea on the peak. It takes roughly three hours to hike down to Kibo Hut.
You can rest and eat a nice meal outside at Kibo Hut. You will continue to descend to Horombo Hut after eating (3720m). After a long day of exertion, you will eat dinner, wash, and have a good night’s sleep at the hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3720m) To Marangu Gate (1980m)
Distance covered: 27km
Approx. time taken: 6 hours
Breakfast is provided.

before your trip home, following the hike. Depending on your flight timings, you can go on a day trip to a hot spring, coffee farm, or waterfall; alternatively, our driver will take you to Kilimanjaro Airport so you can catch your journey home.
