Beginning in Moshi.

Finale: Moshi.

Route details: Lemosho trail on Kilimanjaro is often one of the less travelled and calmer routes on the mountain. In terms of the natural systems and landscapes it travels through, it is also the newest and arguably the most diverse. This route takes you through a lush rainforest for the first two days before emerging into heath and moorland. On the third day, you’ll connect with the Machame Route. On the western side of Kilimanjaro, a narrow trail begins. It has some very steep and undulating sections. Arrival day from Moshi to Kilimanjaro airport

Day 0: Touchdown in Tanzania

You will be met by your guide, who will give you a briefing on your forthcoming trip and check your equipment to make sure you have all the appropriate mountain gear, when you are picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi town. On this day, the missing equipment can be rented. No meals are included.

Day 1: In Moshi To the Gate of Londorossi (2250m) Going to Big Tree Camp (2780m)

After breakfast, you will drive to the Londorossi gate, which is about a 2-hour drive away. After completing all of the registration paperwork, you will travel another 15 kilometres on a bumpy road to the starting point of this hike deep in the rain forest. Today’s walk will be the shortest of the entire trek, lasting about 3-3 hours, giving you a taste of what lies ahead in the coming days. The walk takes you through dense and unspoiled rainforest, which is a stark contrast to the scenery you will encounter over the next few days. The beautiful Big Tree Camp at 2780m is your destination for the day.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2780m) To Shira Camp 1 (3500m)

Following breakfast, you will follow a thin trail through the rainforest before leaving the green area behind and heading into moorland. Erica and Lobelia plants will begin to take over the landscape. Depending on the season, you can have a hot lunch on the way or a lunch packed/lunch box. After about 4-5 hours, you will arrive at Shira one camp, where you will have your evening meal and spend the night.

Day 3: Shira one Camp (3500m) To Shira Camp 2 (3900m)

After breakfast, you resume your hike, which will be less strenuous than the day before. You will cross Shira Ridge, which provides spectacular views of the Rift Valley and Mt Meru. You will walk on ground where lava once flowed, as the ever-changing landscape will surprise you once more. You will also come across the large Senecien, which can grow to be about 9 metres tall. Shira two Camp will provide you with a hot lunch. This will be your overnight destination (3900m).

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 (3900m) To Lava Tower (4640m) To Barranco Camp (3960m)

After breakfast, you will begin your ascent to Lava Tower with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau. This day, you will receive a light lunch because we will provide a hot lunch at the lava tower. You will gain 740m in altitude. You will rest here before descending again. This is an acclimatising day, in which you will climb high but sleep low, giving you a good idea of how your body reacts to altitude. The landscape will change once more as you pass through the Barranco Valley, with its large Senecas and smaller Lobelia plants. After a long 6 – 7 hour hike, you will arrive at your beautiful camp for the night, Barranco Camp. The crew will be waiting for you with a well-deserved evening meal before you settle in for the night.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3960m) To Karanga Camp (4035m)

You’ll start climbing the famous Barranco Wall right after breakfast. This is most likely the most difficult section of the entire route. We place a high value on safety, so please follow the instructions of your guides to ensure a safe ascent. You may need to use your hands from time to time to get a better grip, but there are no alpine climbing passages. When you reach the summit, you will walk along the mountain ridge and, if the weather permits, you will have a great view of Kibo’s southern glacier as well as the Kibo summit. After 3 – 4 hours, you will arrive at Karanga Camp for the night.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4035m) To Barafu Camp (4640m)

After breakfast, hike to Barafu Camp, your destination for the day at (15,220 ft) 4640m. You should be there in 3 to 4 hours for the hot lunch. Today’s scenery will be mostly afro-alpine dessert. When you arrive at camp, you’ll eat a filling early dinner before settling in for a good night’s sleep in preparation for tomorrow’s exciting climbing.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4640m) To Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Mweka Camp (3080m)

At 00:00, your day will begin. After hot tea and biscuits, you will begin your 5-7 hour walk to Stella Point, the Kilimanjaro crater rim. You will take a short break here if necessary before continuing on for another 1-2 hours to the trip’s highlight, Uhuru Peak (5895m). As you stand at the top of Africa, watching the sunrise light up the surrounding summits and landscape is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. After taking some much-needed photos, you’ll return to Barafu Camp for a 1-2 hour rest. After everyone has had enough rest, you will continue down to Mweka gate (3080m), a 3 hour walk. The rest of the evening is free for you to unwind; you’ll have a nice evening meal and a good night’s sleep.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3080m) To Mweka Gate (1630m) To Moshi

Before beginning your final stretch, you will be treated to a traditional farewell ceremony from the mountain guides. A 2 to 3 hour walk back to Mweka Gate will take you through the rainforest. Our driver will be waiting for you and will transport you back to the hotel. The rest of the day is yours to freshen up, relax, and absorb all of the excitement of the previous few days.
